If you’re looking for effective ways to keep students engaged in your Kajabi course, one of the best things you can do is add a gamification element. Kajabi is one of my favorite online course platforms because it has so many features, and its gamification capabilities are second to none.

In this article, I’ll discuss the relevance of gamification for course creators, Kajabi gamification capabilities, and how to leverage them to provide an exceptional learner experience.

What Is Gamification?

If you’ve ever played a game like Sonic the Hedgehog, you know how engaging it can be. Each task you complete wins you golden rings and access to exciting new zones. Each new milestone gives Sonic greater speed and more opportunities to continue his thrilling trip.

Gamification refers to the use of game design features and ideas in non-game environments. This strategy is used to increase engagement, involvement, loyalty, competitiveness, and other desired behaviors in a variety of situations. 

It’s important to note that there’s a difference between gamification and using actual games. Unlike employing full-fledged games, gamification focuses on applying game mechanics to non-game contexts, making learning processes more interactive and rewarding while still maintaining a focus on educational objectives.

The fundamental idea is to make non-game-like tasks more enjoyable and engaging by combining characteristics common to games.

Some of the key characteristics of gamification includes;

  • Points: Users gain points for accomplishing certain activities or meeting goals, which can encourage ongoing engagement and effort.
  • Badges and Achievements: These are visual markers of success that acknowledge and reward users for certain activities and milestones.
  • Leaderboards: Rankings that convey a sense of rivalry by presenting users’ progress in comparison to others.
  • Levels: As users progress, they may ‘level up,’ unlocking additional challenges or prizes that might promote ongoing participation.
  • Challenges and Quests: Specific tasks or objectives that users must achieve, usually within a certain duration or sequence.
  • Feedback Systems: Provides immediate feedback on user activities, either good (rewards, points) or negative (losing points, failing a task), to guide and motivate future action.
  • Storytelling: Storytelling is creating a story around tasks or difficulties in order to make them more interesting and meaningful.

Gamification is extensively utilized in a variety of industries, including education (to improve learning and engagement), business (for staff training and customer engagement), health and wellness (to promote healthy habits), marketing (to build brand involvement and loyalty), and many more.

The goal is to encourage involvement, engagement, and loyalty in non-game situations using game-like elements.

The community aspect of Kajabi is ideal for gamification since it provides a plethora of tools, such as live chat and commenting, to foster healthy rivalry and engagement among students.

Members of Kajabi may communicate with one another, exchange questions, and offer counsel using the community function. You may utilize it in a plethora of ways.

The community challenge feature (a community challenge is an activity, task, or check-in that everyone can do together.) is especially useful as it lets you create two different kinds of challenges:

One-time challenge: is a single task (such as the night photography task or the social media detox challenge).

A recurring challenge: is a daily, weekly, or even monthly challenge (for example, the 14-Day Networking Challenge).

You may publish in the community to create excitement and to announce a prize for the winner or for everyone who completes the challenge in order to engage your members.

Kajabi communities also have leaderboards, which you may choose to show. Leaderboards show participants how they stack up against their peers in terms of learning progression or performance. They promote healthy competitiveness.

Students can earn points for their leaderboard rank in the following ways:

  • Complete a challenge (100 points).
  • Your post is inspirational (1 point).
  • Provide feedback/comment on a post (3 points, one comment per post).
  • For being inspired by someone’s post.
  • Participate in a poll (1 point).
  • The first five texts sent are worth one point each.
  • Someone loves your message. (1 point per like).

To add another degree of gamification to the leaderboard, give a reward for attaining the top place. For example, you might provide a free live learning session for whoever is in charge at the end of each month.

Leaderboards are more effective when combined with a badge system.

Badges are rewards that students earn for accomplishing a certain activity or meeting a specified objective.

Feedback
